Welcome to Mrs. Benzing's classroom blog! This week we started on our million dollar paper where you use all ten AAAWWUBBISs and write about what you would do if you had a million dollars. For example, one sentence could say, "Although I have a million dollars, I would still go to school."

In addition, in science class we are starting our independent science experiment. Garrett is answering the questions "could air and water both mixed together make a rocket go into space?" Logan is answering "would a turtle go to fruit or veggies faster." We started to write down all of the supplies we need and all of our procedures. Also, we started to practice writing a essay for the ERBs. Mrs. Benzing wanted us to practice this because we will have a certain amount of time to write our essay for the real test. Lastly, we have to memorize the song Ode to Joy for violin, and we have a playing test next week.

This week we made personification videos on tap booth and they're posted on flickr. We also made posters about what we personified.

Next week we are going to The Library of Congress for a whole day. We have emailed out the names of the people who will chaperoning. We will be presenting our genius hour PowerPoint on Monday to some of the people in Ms. Grubb's class. We have finished our reading group novels, Toliver's Secret and The Keeping Room. We will soon start our book projects. This weeks blog by, Clara and Graeme.

It has been a long time since we blogged. We were very busy this week. We did an activity where we wrote about the gift we would be and we had to use a abstract noun. Then, we made our Santa and colored it. Here is a picture of some Santas we did.

We also wrote a pen pal letter to our friends in Kenya. Next, we drew a picture of what we wrote about. We had the Book Fair this week as well. On Wednesday we did our browser for what books we wanted at the book fair. The theme this year was Egypt. On Thursday we bought the books we wanted to buy. Garrett bought a book called Big Nate, and  Logan bought a book called Clementine for Christmas. There were many books to choose from. Finally, you could bring in toys for kids that do not have as much as us, which is called the Toy Drive. St. Johns has already filled many Santa bags filled with toys and games. This is just some of the fun activities we did this week.

Welcome to the weekly blog by Rebecca and Brooke.  This week the 5th grade had the chance to sign up for Battle of the Books.  The Battle of the Books is a program for kids to read.  Then in April, Mrs. Grubb's team will get to compete with other Howard County elementary schools.  We also had our first Book Club on Thursday night.  The book we read was Hatchet.  In book club we discussed Brian (the main character) and how he changed throughout the book.  This week the 5th grade also got to start their Mix N' Match Me.  We are learning about similes and metaphors in class.  In the Mix N' Match Me, each student got to choose 9 adjective to descrie themselves.  Then they had to turn those adjective into similes and metaphors.  For example, one adjective could be athletic and the simile could be "I am as athletic as a gazelle running bounding across a field".

Lastly, we learned what our Christmas play theme is.  We will give you a hint...it is the anniversary of a classic Christmas movie.  The 5th grade definitely had a phenomenal week!

Mrs. Benzing's class did a lot this week.  One thing we did was a special science thing.  What we did was we each had an ingredient, and we had to squirt it into a bowl.  After that we had to try to put that ingerdient back in the bottle.  Mrs. Vance was trying to teach us when we say mean statements, we can apoligize but we can't take it back.

We had a meeting called the Road to Middle School where we talked to the a few sixth graders about what kind of schedule they had, what sports did their school have, and how long did the teachers give them to get to class.  It will help fifth grade transition nicely to middle school.  The third graders, fourth graders, and fifth graders could have come.  It was optional though.

Lastly, we did a newscast.  The newscast was a video filming where Mrs. Benzing's class talked about events.  Some of the events we talked were The road to middle school, the Pope traveling, hurricane Joaquin, and illegal fishing.  So that is some ot the events that happened this week.  By: Morgan Hicks and Rebecca Haskey

In Mrs. Benzing's class we had an all school chapel with our book buddies to celebrate St.John's Parish day School 50th anniversary.  We had to make a birthday card for St. John's anniversary and we put a poem inside the card and had everybody sign it.  This week we met our book buddies from Ms. Pontier's class,  made friendship neckalaces with them, and read books to them.

We started our Newscast project which has current events, weather reporter, breaking news , and interviewing.  We are also finishing up our Spanish project where you look up a famous Hispanic person and research that person and then present the project on PowerPoint.
